As a mexican american group we have a different kind of language ranging anything from Spanish, hand gestures, slang. In order to be able to be a mariachi we have to sing, and all of our songs except maybe two or three are spanish. Also many of our customers do speak spanish and only spanish but once in a while we will get english speaking customers, so spanish is our form of communication through out the gigs. We do have spanish slang as well, for example “Aye” which could translate to “hey, stop, no, you go girl”, or even just a basic yell, and many more. As many of us are mexican americans and most of us being raised in a multilingual household we speak a lot of spanish-english slang. Our slang consists of “ni lo se, honestly” (I dont even know honestly), “que tocaron last night” (what did u play last night), etc. We also have hand gestures, and what I mean by hand gestures is that when a customer requests a song, and wants to sing along, we have to be able to switch keys because not everybody sings at the same tone. So our guitar player hold up one of his five fingers, and each finger signifies something different. Your pointer finger is DO, your middle finger is RE, the ring finger is MI, and so on and so forth. sometimes depending on the song or the version that we sing we might also have to end the song short, so our guitar player could nod at us, which signifies to cut the song short, and vise versa with starting a song, that's how we keep up with a singer.
