When we go play for an audience this can include anything from Quinceaneras (a mexican celebration of a 15 year old on their birthday), serenades, Birthdays, Funerals or Weddings. Depending on the crowd that we play for we get different reaction which can be Excitement over seeing us, Sadness from hearing an old song, or even anger over hearing a song they strongly dislike. Our customers range from happy folks, to drunk people especially depending on the time of day. When we play we either play early mornings or six o’clock at night all the way to six am. Mariachi is unique because unlike other music groups he do have a genre which would be mexican music, but within that we have the happy, the sad and the drunk dancing songs. but within that we have different genres which could be “sones” which is happy song, “bolero” which is romantic, “rancheras” which are traditional family history songs, and “corridos” which are like ballads.
The key component to making a mariachi group a discourse community is the way we feel about it, you have to basically put your emotions into your arms, wrists, and fingers to make the customers or audience feel the same passion as you and as much as the composer felt when writing it, because WE ARE the entertainers and our job is to make the customer or audience satisfied and filled with pleasure from our music.
These are a couple of videos of what we play and where.
This includes: Serenades, Quinceneras, funerals, Birthdays, Reunions, City performances, and school performance
